New BA Role
I am due to start in a BA role at the end of the month. I have been a BA at my current company for about 5 years, however due to a take over i have been offered a position within the company taking over the current company i am working for.

Its within the same industry and i am keen to get started. However i am a little nervous about stepping out of my comfort zone and having to understand new systems, processes and establish new relationships. Its something i have done before, 5 years ago in this case but it is still quite daunting.

I was perhaps a little naive 5 years ago when i stared my current BA job and perhaps didn't really grasp the importance of building effective relationships with people around me. Its something i have learnt from, corrected and am keen to get right from day one in my new role.

Does anyone have any advice on how to approach day one in a new job within a new company?

Re: New BA Role

Hi MrCo,

Congratulations on your new role!

Sounds like you're blessed to continue to have a job in this crazy market.  This is probably a testament to your performance and value in your current job.  So try to not sell yourself short!

Being nervous is not a bad thing - use your nervousness as a motivator to succeed.  Also - look at it as a great opportunity to learn new things and make new friends.  Have fun!

Enough pep-talk, here are some other thoughts for day one:

  • Smile and introduce yourself to other folks.
  • Let other do the talking: day one is not the time to prove yourself - let your work product do that for you.  Instead, allow others to brag, let other talk and tell you all about their value and role for the organization.  You'll learn tons of things about the organization, structure, key players, etc.
  • Ask insightful questions and begin to build a high-level mental model of the organization: what are they key systems, who owns what processes, who are the big players.
  • Identify sources of information: people who like to talk and tell you everything about everything, document repositories, product guides, training courses, etc.

Let us know how things work out for you!
