Do You Tailor Your Resume To An Advertised Job ?

We (Project Team) see quite a few resumes for needed project resources. Many are just Cut-&-Past stuff from the ad onto their resume and they call it "Tailoring" ... that is Boring and they all look the same ... Nothing Stands Out from the others.

When we review these resumes, we look for something with a little personality in the Summary / Profile, a little ice breaker from the standard template stuff, something that makes you read a little further on and maybe even invite that person in for an interview.

How do you prefer to do your resume ?

Also during a screening interview ...We skip over the Ego Tripped ... they usually don't fit in with a Team and can't stand that people have different ideas.

One of the questions we ask is:

Q: On a scale of 1 to 10, how do you rate yourself.

You would be surprised of the number of people who answered 12 or higher.

Re: Do You Tailor Your Resume To An Advertised Job ?

I ALWAYS advocate talioring the resume to the specific roll.  But this does not mean cutting and pasting from the job description.  It just means that the best resume is a brief resume, and the areas where more detail can be given are those that reflect the skills required by the job description.

Re: Do You Tailor Your Resume To An Advertised Job ?

 Hi Nick,

I see this all the time and its very disappointing because you know that some of these candidates are exceptional and would be a perfect fit for the organization. However, the way they present themselves make it almost impossible to even consider.

I do sympathize however, because I too had a copy paste resume when I first began in my career. I thought I was being "efficient", in hindsight I now realize I was simply being "lazy" ;)

My wife was very kind to point that out to me, although she can be very sarcastic at times.

and thats the thing, as a recruiter I see these resumes and it just screams "laziness".

Best,

Andy

Re: Do You Tailor Your Resume To An Advertised Job ?

I've been receiving emails for some contracts ... and they are found by a keyword search on my resume:

"Please be aware that our database has searched out your resume based on key word skills"

I Do Not change my resume for each job ... it is a generic 1 Page resume and has kept me busy. I do offer an expanded resume if requested ... but otherwise I apply with a 1 Pager.

I have a Keyword Section at the bottom of my resume that I use with on-line applications and entered into the Applicant Tracking System. It might Never been found without it.

My Keyword Section Is This:
