Is Stakeholder Engagement Approach an Input to Planning Business Analysis? 

On page 32 of BABOK version 3, a business analysis approach is an input to planning stakeholder engagement.  Ironically, it also says planning business analysis will use a stakeholder management approach.  Does it mean that a stakeholder management approach is an input to planning business analysis?

Hi Danlee, 

The answer to your question is a yes in my view. 

BABOK (which I should state right away, I am not a fan of) states the Planning aspect of BA work should always be undertaken at the very start. The reality is that this can rarely happen, but that's for another discussion. So common sense should come into favour instead. 

First of all you need to be able to plan who your stakeholders are going to be, what area of the project they will be the SME for. Make sure that you have a Stakeholder for each part of the project. 

Your approach to them is a part of planning in that you need to consider what they are the SME for and this is ALL you should be discussing with them (they will try to tell you more and have their opinion on other areas, but these opinions are not your primary focus as they are not the SME for that area). How you approach them is useful to know beforehand as there may be certain techniques that work better for different stakeholders. So planning this beforehand is important. 

Knowing when you can meet with them is also important to know beforehand. For example, if you don't meet Stakeholder 'a' on Friday, he is off for 2 weeks holiday. So you know you need to speak to him on Friday or earlier if possible.

However, often things change in a project, and sometimes your requirements may need clarification or require a new look at them (lets say because the project budget has been cut). In this instance, just start your planning again, and make changes as required.

Agree. Business analysis is recursive process instead of linear process.  What we got from planning our business analysis could be used to plan our stakeholder engagement approach.  We might need to change our business analysis approach after we come up with a stakeholder engagement approach.

Thank you @Danlee for the post that is very pertinent to many including me who find it perplexing that many outputs stated to be used by other tasks are not listed as inputs in the tasks' respective i/o diagrams - well, at least not in the Input boxes. These outputs are found in the Guideline and Tools box instead though. 

For an example, let's use the output 3.2 SH Engagement Approach. In pg 25, it is included in the Guidelines and Tools box while missing in the Input one.

The reason is still a mystery to me as I have been looking high and low for it in BABOK v3 but to no avail. Anyone with the answer, please help! For now, I just assume that SH Engagement Approach came in as input at subsequent iteratives of the 3.1 Plan BA Approach task.

Hi Ken

First a disclaimer, I've never read the babok despite 20 years as a BA. I should really but who has time?

I basically have a set of techniques/skills that I adapt for each project as required. Techniques are the key. With experience I've expanded them steadily over time. 

Cook cutter approaches don't work.
