Interesting question.

Perhaps we can find the answer in the IIBA stuff. But wait, the IIBA is actually a meta model, so that people/companies can derive their own methodologies from the meta model. It would be great to have a one size fits all model (not meta model); but sadly this is not the case. For example, COTS require different requirements models to (say an inhouse) developed system. Anyway, there is the traditional structured, incremental and iterative models out there such as DFDs, RUP, ICONIX and others (Jacobsons latest). When you get really serious about size, theres Zachman, DoDaf and ToGaf frameworks that constrain analysis models.

Many years ago, in the early 1980s, when we could not find a methodology to build a very large system (connecting 2500 postal outlets across Australia), we relied on the IEEE standards for requirements creation and management.  There are so many.  Here's some more to add to this list;

• Sig Sigma
• Gap analysis
• TQM
• BPR
• User stories and backlogs
• Lean, limiting Work in Progress 
• Time boxing
• Use cases

And then there are things to think about such as

• What are the goals for your project
• What is your organisation's planning capability (i.e. do you have a dynamic environment you operate in? Do you have planning skills?)
