Hi John,

That's a very loaded question - its a bit like what car should I get? Until you know what I want, you cant answer it!

So first things first. What type of requirement are you trying to find out? Is it just to understand a process, for example?

On a very basic understanding I would follow this:

What - What is it you do?

Why - why do you need to do it?

When - when do you need to do it?

Who - who does it?

How - How do you do it?

Added to those, get the Stakeholder to take you through an example if possible. If you don't know anything about the process, even better. Don't leave until you do, and ask all the questions you need to, to make sure you do understand it.

Failing that, any more information about the particular requirement would help.

I prefer to start with the stakeholder explaining a particular scenario or situation. At this stage I'm only documenting. I'll then find out the pain points and advantages of the scenario. @Stewart F is quite right about the questions. You want to understand the business context and requirement as if you were actually the stakeholder. You could also explore the 5 Whys technique to help further.

Re: Requirements Interview Questions
Hi John,

I'll recommend that instead of thinking of what are the questions you have to ask, think in what are the answers you are looking for and what are you going to do with them. Think that the first thing you need to understand is how the current process works. So, for example, asking what're the daily responsibilities your stakeholder has will be a good beginning to start learning what is the business process like. After this you will have a great picture of the business process and here is when you can start looking for the best way to improve it.

Re: Requirements Interview Questions

As per my knowledge, most asked question is how you will complete the business need?

Re: Requirements Interview Questions

What requirements questions

  • What do I know about this feature?
  • Or, what assumptions am I making about this feature that I need to confirm?
  • What does this feature need to do?
  • What is the end result of doing this?
  • What are the pieces of this feature?
  • What needs to happen next?
  • What must happen before?
  • What if….?
